From lumber town to the Old Mill District
Bend is part of my Central Oregon coverage, alongside home base in Redmond, a short drive to the northeast. It grew up on lumber: two sawmills once ran around the clock on opposite banks of the Deschutes River, among the largest pine mills in the world, until they closed in the early 1990s. Those same mill buildings, smokestacks and all, are now the Old Mill District, shops, restaurants, and paved river trails, anchored by the Hayden Homes Amphitheater, the largest outdoor concert venue in the state.
